About Montessori

The Montessori method was developed by the Italian physician and researcher, Maria Montessori, based on her many years working with small children. The first Montessori school was established in 1907, attracting the attention of educators everywhere. Montessori has now become the world’s largest education movement with 22,000 schools worldwide and 600+ here in the UK.

Montessori is an exciting process of self-discovery, giving children confidence, independence, self-discipline and a hunger to learn because they are learning through their own actions and at their own pace. Fundamental to the approach is the belief that a child’s early years – from birth to six – are the period when they have the greatest capacity to acquire new skills and to develop, so the importance of choosing the right pre-school cannot be under-estimated.

At Caterpillars Montessori Pre-School, we believe that true creativity stems from individual freedom of expression. Children are encouraged to express themselves through singing, dancing, acting, talking, drawing, painting, sticking, gluing, cutting, arranging and mark making. What we know is that, unlike adults, children aren’t really interested in the end result... it’s the fun and fascination of the creative process that matters to them.

"As soon as I walked into Caterpillars I knew that this would be the perfect environment for my child to develop and flourish. Not only the Montessori philosophy but the knowledgeable staff have reinforced my initial impression and Theodore has settled in remarkably quickly. He loves going and is full of beans for the rest of the day!"
